Iyaloja of Ijebuland, Elewuju assassinated in Ogun

ABEOKUTA—Tragedy struck in Ijebu-Ode as unknown assailants reportedly hacked the Iyaloja-General of Ijebuland, Alhaja Sadiat Elewuju to death.
The deceased, 82, was reportedly attacked by six unidentified men at her residence in Sabo-Molode area of Ijebu-Ode in Ijebu-Ode Local Government Area of the state at about  3.00pm.
We gathered that, the attackers inflicted several machete cuts on her and left her in the pool of her blood.
Attempt by some members of her family to rescue her proved abortive as she reportedly died in hospital.
According to a source, the woman was rushed to three hospitals including Olabisi Onabanjo University Teaching hospital and Lagos State Teaching hospital before she gave up the ghost.
When contacted, the Ogun State Command Police Public Relations Officer, Olumuyiwa Adejobi, confirmed that suspected assailants macheted the woman to death.
Adejobi said,”She was attacked by suspected assailants and found in the pool of her blood.  Someone informed the police, we rushed down to the area, we found mama in the pool of her blood. She was taken to hospital in Sagamu for treatment. She was later referred to another hospital in Lagos, where she was confirmed dead.
“The command will do the needful to make sure we get those culprits apprehended and brought to book.
“The commissioner of police, Abdulmajid Ali, will visit the scene , visit the family, visit Ijebu town so that we will be able to re-strategize and make sure there is proper security in Ijebu-Ode and do proper investigation into the matter. We assure the good people of the state that we are going to get those who perpetrated the act.
“We want to commiserate with the family of the deceased, we want to commiserate with the people of Ijebu-Ode, and the Iyaloja community in Ogun State generally; we want to assure them that the police would definitely make sure that these culprits are brought to book.”
Her remains had since be committed to mother earth according to Islamic rites.
Visiting   her residence,symphatisers mainly market men and women and politicians from different political parties were seen discussing the development.
A condolence register had since been opened while the popular Oke-Aje market was shut in her honour.
Callers at Elewuju’s residence were the Acting Governor of the State, Chief (Mrs) Yetunde Onanuga; the Secretary to the State Governor, Mr. Taiwo Adeoluwa;Senator Adegbenga Kaka; former chairman of the Teaching Service Commission(TESCOM), Ms. Bukonla Onabanjo ; chairmen of Ijebu-Ode and Odogbolu Local Government areas, Honourables Rasak Daddah and Wale Shittu; chieftain of the All Progressives Congress, Chief Jide Awosedo and a member representing Odogbolu State Constituency, Hon.Adebowale Ojuri, among others.
In her remarks ,Onanuga,described   Elewuju’s death as a rude shock and promised that the perpetrators of the act would be brought to book.
Meanwhile, a  neighbour to the deceased person told our correspondent   that her assailants did not take anything away from her house.
The source   who did not want her name in print said Iyaloja’s killing was politically motivated.
She said  ,”She was very popular in the political circles even the house she lived in was given to her by former Ogun State governor, Gbenga Daniel.
“She stood her ground on any matter and to her credit, she has championed many causes for women especially the market women.”
The deceased was installed as the Iyaloja-General of Ijebuland by the Awujale of Ijebu-Ode, Oba Sikiru Adetona
